The song cycle "Myrten" was composed in February-April 1840, when Schumann was in a passionate relationship with his future wife, Clara, and was presented to her on the eve of their wedding on September 11th. "Dedication" is the first song in the cycle and is the most famous love song among Schumann's songs. The lyrics are by Rückert and express Schumann's passionate love for Clara: "You are my heart, my soul, you are my joy, my heartache, you are the world I live in, you are the sky I soar to, oh, you will comfort my heartache forever, the place I will reach!" This song was later arranged for piano by Clara Schumann and Liszt, and is widely performed. The title Myrten is the name of a tree that represents good luck, love, marriage, and brides, and it produces white or pale pink flowers that are used to decorate brides and are said to represent chastity. Lento & Vivace is an arrangement that combines the best of Clara and Liszt's arrangements. It is also recommended for celebratory performances such as weddings.
*The original song is in A flat major (modulates to E flat major halfway through), but it has been arranged in G major (modulates to E flat major halfway through) for easier performance.
