In 1892, Brahms was the first collection of small pieces in his later years at the age of 59, especially “Op 116” to “Op 119”, which can be said to be the culmination of Brahms. It consists of three fantasies and four interludes, but the fantasies have a passionate character and the interludes a dreamier character.
Its compositional techniques have become more sophisticated and elaborate and inspired, yet it is a work that gives you a sense of loneliness and a sense of giving up in your later years. The title "Fantasies" is supposed not to have been worn by Brahms, but later by a song.
The fourth interlude, delivered this time, is an Adagio-nocturne-style piece, but the opening, fragmentary two motives are impressive, requiring passionate expression even within the quiet.
* The original piece is in E major, but it is arranged in G major, with clarinet, tenor saxophone and trumpet accompaniment in B-flat major, and alto saxophone accompaniment in F major.
