It is an interlude between the second act, first and second field of the song "Thais" (premiered 1894), composed by Jules Massenet, and is famous as a violin solo but arranged for instrumental solos and piano accompaniment in Lento & Vivace.
The story of the song play is set on the Nile in Africa. Alexandria's dance princess Tais, who had been living a life of luxury and pleasure, gradually became bored with her current life and depraved in search of more stimulation. Saint Pahnachius convinces him to save somehow, but Thaise is gradually drawn to such Pahnachius and tries to seduce the monk. However, to the zealous persuasion of the monk, Thaith, finally converted, deserts his house and enters the monastery. However, while persuading, Pahnachius, who had become obsessed with the charming Thaith, could not forget about Thaith and finally tried to push him to the monastery, where Thaith was dying. Seeing Pahnachius swearing love to such Tice, Tice ascends. It is an eventful story.
