Mascagni represented talent so young, he was called a child prodigy in his native Italy Livorno. He also entered the Milan Conservatory with distinction and was taught by the composer Ponchielli at the same gate as Puccini. But he was an unconventional personality, jumping out of the conservatory and living a haphazard life, entering a traveling operetta troupe or becoming a conductor of an orchestra in a southern Italian village. "Cavalleria Rusticana" is based on the novel and play of the same name by the Italian novelist Giovanni Verga, and is a work composed by Mascagni as an opera in one act (premiered in 1890), which earned him a win in the competition. Mascagni was recognized all over Europe at once for the great success of Cavalleria Rusticana, and was soon regarded as Verdi's successor. The interlude is characterized by a beautiful melody, and many of you know it. It is a well-deserved piece of music to be played passionately with grace.
