Debussy bestows one daughter Claude Emma with his second wife. And in 1908, the present he had dedicated to his daughter, who had turned three, was the piano suite "Children's Corner" which is included "Golliwogg's Cakewalk".
"Golliwog" is the name of a black boy doll character that appears in Florence Upton's picture book. "Cakewalk" is a dance that originated in America at the end of the 19th century. It is also said that the winner of the contest received this name because he was given a cake.
It's a humorous song that's rare for Debussy, where her daughter's favorite carachter dances. It is recommended in one song that is perfect for a fun atmosphere such as a family party.
